Jewish food – fading into oblivion or enjoying a revival?

Marta Glinka 25 October 2017

Jewish food – fading into oblivion or enjoying a revival will be a subject of the debate which will be held at the auditorium of POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, 6 Anielewicza Street, on 25th October. It will be run in Polish and English (with simultaneous translation). The participants in the discussion are: Liz Alpern and Jeffrey Yoskowitz  from New York forming Gefilteria duo, which promotes Jewish cuisine from East Europe, chef Aleksander Baron and Malka Kafka, owner of vegetarian restaurants in Warsaw. Discussion will be chaired by Aga Kozak, journalist and food culture promotor. The guests will try to find answers to the questions related to Jewish cuisine: How did the bialeys – rolls stuffed with onions – make their way from Białystok to New York? What are latkes and who ‘invented’ them? What is the ”true” Jewish cuisine, where can we find it, does it still exist in Poland? The entrance for the debate is free. The event will be accompanied by culinary workshop organised in Menora Info Punkt on 26th October at 18:00 and a special dinner in Besamim Restaurant created by Aleksander Baron and Gelifteria duo which will take place on 27th October at 19:30. The 6-course dinner which will be available in vegetarian and nonvegetarian version will cost 100 zł per person. The tickets for the dinner are available at bilety.polin.pl or in the museum’s cashiers.
